Female comics from Central Europe

zamekThe international exhibition will present works on the topic of masculinization in traditional comics and the attempt of women comics artists to interrupt this process. Apart from defying the conventions in the genre by women in the context of the plot and form of comics an important goal of the exhibition is to display the autobiographic element and realism of women’s comics and the creation of feminine stories in the context of the feminist and gender discourse. The last but not least aspect of the exhibition is the presentation of the young generation of women comics artists from central Europe.

 Life under the sanctions

zografZograf, the author of the outstanding work titled “Regards from Serbia” described the developments of the civil war in former Yugoslavia in his comics.
“Life under the sanctions” is an excerpt of this comic – a diary written down directly during this war from a not really well known perspective i.e. the every-day-life of the Serbian people during the bombings of the NATO forces, the crisis in the interhuman relations, apathy and victualling problems.

The Latvian Comics Art Magazine kuš! presents the exhibition „Lost in the City” with works by young Latvian artists who are deleting the borders between contemporary art and cartooning about lost things, getting and being lost in the city, tips how not to get lost and feeling “lost” in a wider sense.

The curator of the exhibition, David Schilter, editor of the only Latvian comics magazine, planned the exhibition as a spatial version of the magazine and showcase of Latvian artists and therefore invited artists which have already participated in the magazine and experimented with visual narration: Anete Melece, Kaspars Groševs, Ingrīda Pičukāne, Maija Kurševa and Oskars Pavlovskis. In the process of the exhibition set up the artists choose their favourite medias and the result is a very colorful array of artworks consisting of classic painting, a fake sketchbook, silk-prints, a traditional comics, an installation combining drawings and photos and also an audio-visual installation.

All the participating artists are graduates of the Visual Communication Department of the Latvian Art Academy.

On neighbouring frames. Poles and Czechs about each other in comics

As a part of a project of CENTRALA Central Europe Comics Art called “On neighbouring frames. Poles and Czechs about each other in comics” (“W s±siednich kadrach Polacy i Czesi o sobie w komiksie”), a competition was organised for a news style comic story and comics essays by Polish and Czech artists. The theme was how the two nations perceive eachother. The submitted works were realistic or metaphoric stories diverging from or “remaking” the common stereotypes held by each nation. Pieces of shared history which show the differences or similarities of historical experience. The modern experiences and perceptions of the neighbouring societies, cultures and languages. Particulary interesting were the stories based upon individual experiences of visiting the other country. The project included a catalogue published by the CENTRALA Library.
